What Is a Progressed Chart?

A progressed chart is your birth chart grown older. The natal chart is a photograph of the sky at one instant and never changes; a progressed chart takes that same sky and lets it keep moving, so the pattern you were born with can be read as it unfolds rather than as it was fixed. Secondary progressions are the technique nearly every western astrologer means by "progressions". They answer a different question from a horoscope or a transit report. Not "what is happening to me this week" but "what phase of my life is this, and what is it turning into". The timescale is years, not days.

The Day-for-a-Year Method

The arithmetic is old and disarmingly simple: one day after birth stands for one year of life. If you are thirty-four, your progressed chart is your birth chart recalculated for the sky thirty-four days after you were born — same place, same clock time, a later page of the ephemeris. That is the whole conversion. Everything else follows from it. Because the Sun moves about a degree a day, the progressed Sun moves about a degree a year. Because the Moon covers thirteen degrees a day, the progressed Moon covers thirteen degrees a year — roughly a degree a month, which is why it is the only fast-moving body in a progressed chart and the one most people come here to find.

The progressed Moon spends about two and a half years in each sign and takes roughly twenty-seven and a half years to go all the way round. It is the emotional weather of a long chapter — not what you feel today, but what has been feeding you lately and what you are quietly growing hungry for.
