01What an astrology reading is, and what it isn't

An astrology reading interprets the positions in your birth chart, and the transits to it, for one question or one period of time. A horoscope column interprets a sign.

The word covers three quite different things. An astrology reading from a person is an hour of conversation in which an astrologer reads your chart and reads you: what you ask, what you leave out, the tone you ask it in. An astrology reading as a report is a long document, often sixty pages, that walks the whole chart placement by placement in a fixed order. And an astrology reading of the kind on this page is narrower than either: it opens one part of your chart, for one question or one day, and shows you which part it opened.

Three sources of an astrology reading: a person in conversation, a long computer report, and a chart with six exits that each read one part of it.

All three are reading the same thing. The difference is how much of the chart they read at once and whether you can see which part. A good report is thorough and impersonal; a good astrologer is personal and unrepeatable; a good astrology reading here is specific and checkable. Which one you want depends on what you are carrying when you arrive, and the second section is about that choice.

02Six kinds of astrology reading, and which one to open first

Each of the six doors above reads a different part of your birth chart and answers a different kind of moment. None of them reads the whole chart, because the whole chart is not what you came with. This is what each one opens.

A chart wheel showing which part each reading opens: Love reads Venus and the 5th and 7th houses, Career the Midheaven and 10th, Money the 2nd and 8th, Today the transit ring, Ask whichever part the question names, Places the chart against a map.

03Why every astrology reading here starts from your birth chart

You enter your birth details once. They are saved to your profile, and every reading on this site reads from them: the daily transit, the question you type, the love or career reading, the map of your lines. Change them in one place and every reading changes with them. This sounds like a convenience and it is, but it is also what makes the readings agree with one another. The Venus that Ask My Chart quotes is the same Venus the Love reading opens with, in the same sign and house, because there is only one chart and both are reading it.

One set of birth details becomes one chart, which feeds six readings that cannot disagree about a placement.

Most astrology sites are a row of separate calculators, each with its own form, and a reader who uses three of them has typed their birth time three times and may have typed it slightly differently once. Reports bought from different vendors can disagree about a house system without saying so. A single chart under every astrology reading removes both problems, and it is why the six doors above can be trusted to describe one person rather than six approximations of one.

04Free astrology readings, and what Pro changes

Every reading on this page can be opened without paying, and each one gives a complete small result before it mentions anything else. Pro removes the limits and keeps what you have read. The table is the whole arrangement.

05The best time for an astrology reading

People ask when the best time for an astrology reading is, and there are two honest answers. The first is that the best time for an astrology reading is when you have a real question, because a reading answers a question far better than it answers a vague wish to know more. The second is astrological: certain moments in your own chart make a reading unusually useful, because something is about to change and the chart can tell you what.

  1. 01

    Around your birthday

Your solar return sets the tone for the year ahead. An astrology reading in the weeks around your birthday reads the year that is starting rather than the one that is ending.

  2. 02

When a slow planet is exact

Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly, and a transit from one of them to your Sun, Moon or an angle is exact for days and felt for months. Today's Reading tells you when one is close.

  3. 03

When the progressed Moon changes sign

Every two and a half years or so your progressed Moon enters a new sign, and the emotional season changes with it. A reading at the boundary explains why the last stretch felt the way it did.

  4. 04

    Before a decision, not after

A reading before a move, a job change or a commitment gives you something to weigh. A reading afterwards mostly gives you something to justify. Ask before.

There is no bad time for an astrology reading in the sense of a day on which the chart refuses to answer. But a question asked at one of these four moments tends to get an answer with more in it, because the chart itself is busier then.

06How to read an astrology reading: placements, transits and timing

Every reading on this site is built from three kinds of fact, and knowing them is most of knowing how to read one. A natal placement is a planet in a sign and a house in your birth chart: it is you, and it does not change. A transit is a planet in today's sky making an aspect to one of those natal placements: it is the weather, it has an orb that tells you how sharp it is and a date on which it is exact, and it passes. A progression is a slower movement of your own chart forward through time, and the progressed Moon in particular marks the season you are in, changing over months rather than days.

When an astrology reading names one of these, look for the second half of the sentence: the sign and house for a placement, the orb and exact date for a transit. If the reading cannot tell you those, it is not reading your chart, it is reading your sign. Every reading here shows them, and Ask My Chart lays them out as cards you can hover to see which sentence each one supports.

07An astrology reading from a person, and one from your chart

Both are worth having, and they are not in competition. A person reads the context you never typed and can follow a thread for an hour. The readings on this page answer in seconds, show every source, and refuse to guess beyond what the chart holds. The best use of the second is as preparation for the first: ask until you know which placement your question is really about, then bring that placement to an astrologer.

If you want the full comparison, the Ask My Chart page carries a table of what each does better. The short version is that a person is better at the question you cannot yet phrase, and this page is better at the one you have right now.

08Frequently asked questions

What is an astrology reading?

An astrology reading interprets the positions in your birth chart, and the current transits to it, for one question or one period. It differs from a horoscope column, which interprets a zodiac sign shared by a twelfth of the world, in that it is about your chart specifically and can be checked against it.

Are the astrology readings here free?

Yes. Every reading opens without payment and gives a complete result: today's strongest transit, a question answered with its evidence, the opening of your love, career or money reading, your full astrocartography map. Pro removes the weekly limits and keeps everything you have read.

Do I have to enter my birth details for every reading?

No. You enter them once and they are saved to your profile; every reading on the site uses them. If you correct a birth time, every reading corrects with it.

Which astrology reading should I start with?

If you have a specific question, Ask My Chart. If you want something to read each morning, Today's Reading. If one area of life is on your mind, the Love, Career or Money reading. If you are thinking of moving, Places.

When is the best time for an astrology reading?

When you have a real question. Astrologically, the weeks around your birthday, the days when a slow planet is exact to your Sun, Moon or an angle, and the boundary when your progressed Moon changes sign are the moments a reading tends to have most in it.

Can I get an astrology reading without knowing my birth time?

Yes. Readings will leave out the factors that depend on the time, such as houses and the rising sign, and will say so, so you know what is missing rather than being shown a guess.

Do the different readings agree with each other?

They read the same chart and the same interpretation library, so a placement means the same thing wherever it appears. The Venus named in Ask My Chart is the Venus the Love reading opens with.

Where do my astrology readings go afterwards?

If you are signed in, your questions and answers are kept and can be reopened from your dashboard. Free accounts keep the last seven days; Pro keeps everything.
