01What a yes or no tarot reading is

A yes or no tarot reading answers one closed question with one card: each card leans yes, no, or neither, and the card you draw gives the verdict.

Yes or no tarot is the shortest spread in tarot and the one people reach for most. You hold one question in mind, shuffle, draw a single card and read its leaning. A three-card spread tells a story; a yes or no tarot reading gives a verdict. That makes it quick, and it also makes it easy to misuse, because a single card cannot describe a situation the way a spread can.

Most sites that offer a yes no tarot tool keep the rules to themselves. You get a Yes or a No and have to take it on trust. This one publishes the whole table further down this page: every one of the 78 cards, how it answers upright and reversed, the planet it belongs to and the reason in one sentence. 02How to do a yes or no tarot reading

The yes or no tarot tool at the top of this page does the mechanics for you, but the steps are the same with a deck on your table.

   Ask one closed question

   Phrase it so that yes or no is a complete answer: should I, will it, is it time. A yes or no tarot card can answer one subject and one decision. Write it down if you are using a physical deck.

   Shuffle and draw one card

   Shuffle until it feels finished, then draw. Here the shuffle is cryptographic and happens in your browser; you pick one of seven cards laid face down, and about one card in three comes up reversed.

   Read the leaning, then the timing

   Look up the card’s verdict and its reason in the yes or no tarot list below, then ask whether anything is holding it back. On this page the timing and the chart check appear under the card.

03How the cards answer: yes, not yet, unclear, no

Every card in this yes or no tarot table has one upright leaning. Across the deck that comes to 48 cards that lean yes, 17 that give no answer and 13 that lean no, which matches what readers have long noticed: the tarot is a hopeful deck, and roughly six cards in ten say yes.

Yes

The card supports what you asked about. The Sun, The World and The Star are the clearest yes or no tarot answers in the deck; most court cards and most Pentacles lean yes too.

Not yet

A yes that is being held back. You get it when a yes card comes up reversed, or when the planet behind a yes card is retrograde today. It is a timing answer, not a refusal.

Unclear

The card does not answer the question as asked. The High Priestess, The Moon and the Two of Swords are typical: something is hidden, undecided or still forming. We use this word instead of maybe because it tells you what to do next, which is to find out more or ask something narrower.

No

The card is against it. The Tower, the Ten of Swords and the Three of Swords are the plainest no in yes or no tarot; the Five of Pentacles and the Devil are no as things stand.

Reversed cards follow the rule used across this site: a reversed card is the same energy blocked, delayed or turned inward, never its opposite. So in a yes or no tarot reading a reversed yes becomes not yet, a reversed no stays no, and an unclear card stays unclear. Reversal never turns a no into a yes, because a blocked difficulty does not become good news by being hidden.

Ten cards carry extra weight in a yes or no tarot reading, and the tool says so: a strong yes from The Sun, The World, The Star, the Ace and the Nine and Ten of Cups and the Ace of Pentacles, and a strong no from The Tower and the Three and Ten of Swords. Strength changes the wording, not the verdict.

04The full yes or no tarot card list

Here is the full yes or no tarot list, every card grouped as the deck is. The upright column is the card's own answer; the reversed column follows the rule above. The planet column is the card's Golden Dawn correspondence, which is what the timing check uses. Two published yes no tarot lists we compared disagree with each other on several cards, Death and the Wheel of Fortune among them, so each row here gives its reason.

Where this yes or no tarot table parts from other lists, it is on purpose. Death is unclear rather than yes, because the answer arrives after an ending, not before it. The Wheel of Fortune is yes, but it belongs to Jupiter, which is retrograde for about four months a year, so it often reads as not yet here. The Hierophant is unclear because it depends on whether you are willing to go through the proper channels.

05Timing: when the planet behind your card is retrograde

Timing is what most yes or no tarot tools leave out. In the Golden Dawn system every card answers to a planet. The Magician is Mercury, The Tower is Mars, The World is Saturn. The Lovers is Gemini, so it answers to Gemini's ruler, Mercury. Each numbered card from two to ten sits in a ten-degree slice of the zodiac with its own planet. Only the Aces and Pages point at an element instead.

Planets other than the Sun and Moon regularly appear to move backwards from Earth. That is retrograde motion, and astrologers, like yes no tarot readers, have always read it as a time for review and delay rather than launch. Mercury does it three times a year, occasionally four, for about three weeks; Venus every eighteen months for about six weeks; Mars every two years for about ten weeks; Jupiter and Saturn for four or five months every year; Uranus, Neptune and Pluto for about five months every year.

So this yes or no tarot tool checks the sky before it answers. If your card leans yes and its planet is retrograde today, the verdict becomes not yet, and the page gives the date that planet turns direct, found from the same ephemeris that draws the birth charts on this site. It is a fact about the sky, stated as one: the date Mercury turns direct, not the date your question resolves.

06How to ask a yes or no question the cards can answer

Most unhelpful yes or no tarot answers come from questions that were never closed. A yes or no tarot card can say yes to one thing; it cannot choose between two.

Ask once. Every guide to yes no tarot warns against drawing again until the answer changes, and this tool enforces it: ask the same question on the same day and you get the same card back. Rephrasing the question honestly, so that it asks something new, is a different matter, and gets a new draw.

07When one card is not enough

Use a yes or no tarot card when the question is narrow and the decision is yours. When several people are involved, when you need to know why, or when you keep drawing unclear, a spread does more.
